Verance Announces Provenance and Authentication of Broadcast Media Paper and Upcoming Panel Discussion at IBC 2024

Amsterdam, The Netherlands – September 12, 2024 – Verance, a global watermarking company that powers AI provenance and broadband features for broadcast television, announced the availability of a paper submitted to the IBC 2024 Technical Papers Programme titled “Interoperable Provenance Authentication of Broadcast Media using Open Standards-based Metadata, Watermarking and Cryptography.” Authored by John Simmons and Joe Winograd, the paper delves into the critical issue of ensuring the provenance and authenticity of broadcast media in an era where misinformation is growing every day.

The 17-page paper analyzes how broadcast news content is shared on social media platforms and examines the role of open standards – specifically, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) – in validating the provenance of such content. The paper provides an in-depth exploration of the interplay between cryptographic metadata and watermarking technologies, offering insights into their effectiveness in various success and failure scenarios.

The full paper can be accessed at https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.12336.

In addition to the paper, Verance announced that it will be hosting a panel at the IBC Conference in Amsterdam to discuss the findings in more detail. The panel, titled “Provenance – What Can We Trust?” will take place on September 14, 2024 from 11 am to 12 noon in Conference Room 2 at the IBC Conference.

With the world facing significant political and social challenges, the need for trustworthy news has never been more urgent. This panel will explore how the C2PA standards can be applied to ensure that broadcast news remains reliable, even when shared across social media platforms. The discussion will feature insights from two leading experts:

  • John Simmons, Media Platform Architect at Verance
  • Judy Parnall, Head of Standards & Industry for BBC R&D

Verance invites all attendees of the IBC Conference to join this important discussion on the future of media trust and authenticity.
